Volleyball/Football Class, Nov 2016 - Feb 2017
The volleyball class will start the week of November 28, 2016, immediately after Thanksgiving. We will meet for 3 weeks, then break for Christmas, then return the week of January 16 for the remaining 5 weeks. All students will learn the basic hits in volleyball and practice them with a partner. After practicing the hitting for several weeks, nets will be set up, and students will practice hitting over the net. Shorter nets (about 5' tall) will be set up for the younger players, and regulation nets of 7' 3" will be set up for the older players. Lighter volleyballs will be provided for younger players so they can hit the ball well, even at age 5!
The last week of the class will cover football skills. There will be 4 different sizes of footballs for students to learn basic passing, catching, punting, and place-kicking with the ball. They will also be shown some football equipment and get to block against a soft blocking shield. Kids will not play in any football games, be tackled, or hit each other. They will get an orientation to the game that will help them understand a few of the basics of the game.
The class is open to students ages 5 - 18. All students will benefit greatly from learning these basic skills. Volleyball is a life long skill that all students should learn, whether they like the sport or not! There are opportunities to play volleyball throughout life in social settings and on adult teams in competitive leagues. The class will equip students to play volleyball throughout their lives!
Cost: The fee for the class will be $95 per student for cash/check and $100 for charter school POs. There are no discounts for multiple siblings. The fee must be paid prior to the start of the class. If you have a charter school paying for the class, you will not be required to pay if your purchase order is in hand prior to the start of the class. Without the PO in hand, you will be required to give a deposit check for $100 which will be deposited in the bank and refunded after the charter school pays.
Requirements: Wear tennis shoes, athletic shorts or sweatpants, and a T-shirt. It is recommended that your child wear a long sleeve t-shirt or long sleeve sweatshirt for the volleyball portion. Passing the ball (bumping as some call it) will hurt on the bare arms in cold weather, and some cloth on the arm will help this a lot. Do not have your kids wear a jacket with padding - this will prevent them from hitting the ball well. Bring water. Cleats are not required for the football portion, but may be worn if the student owns cleats. It is not necessary to purchase cleats for this class. All balls and equipment will be provided for the class.
SHOES: Parents, please do not bring your kids to classes with Sandals, slip on shoes, or barefoot. Without proper shoes, children may be required to sit out the class. Many of the activities in class could injure your child's foot without adequate support and protection. Lace up tennis shoes that are tied tightly (not baggy, untied, and loose) are the only proper footwear.
To sign up, go to the registration page on the home page. If you register, you are expected to pay and attend the class! Classes are planned, schedules set, and money is spent based on registration numbers, so do not register unless you will be paying for and attending the class. Also make sure you read the cancellation policy on the CONDUCT AND POLICIES page, and read the same page to understand the behavior expectations for your child. You may contact Todd Nash at California Athletics with questions, but please register through the website. To see where the classes will be held and get directions to the parks, click on the link to the left titled DIRECTIONS. Please do not plan to just show up to a class without registering! If not enough students register, a class could cancel, and you will not know it is cancelled if you are not registered! This is a rare case, and you do not need to check with me before the class starts to confirm it. If there is a change to the schedule, you will be emailed if you are registered on this website.
We will NOT postpone or cancel classes for wet grass or rain. It is a light rain, we can do the class, and we don't need to postpone. Your kids will not be too cold, and they WILL learn to overcome obstacles through doing what might not be comfortable! Bring them out! Moms can stay in the car with a warm coffee and a friend and stay dry - let your kids get wet!
